AmaWaterways launches AmaMelodia expanding Colombia’s river cruise presence

AmaWaterways has officially launched AmaMelodia, its second luxury river cruise ship on Colombia’s Magdalena River, marking another major step in the line’s expansion into South America.

Following the successful debut of AmaMagdalena earlier this year, the launch of AmaMelodia underscores the company’s confidence in Colombia’s potential as a premier river cruise destination and its commitment to sustainable tourism in the region. Carrying just 64 guests, AmaMelodia is designed for comfort and immersion, with spacious staterooms featuring twin balconies and panoramic views of Colombia’s lush riverfront landscapes. Guests can enjoy locally inspired Latin American cuisine, live music, and relaxation spaces such as the Sun Deck whirlpool, creating a refined yet culturally grounded cruising experience. The ship’s décor and culinary approach reflect Colombian artistry and ingredients, with handcrafted furnishings by local artisans.

Passengers can choose from two seven-night itineraries, Magic of Colombia and Wonders of Colombia, exploring the Magdalena River’s biodiversity, music, and history. Excursions include a private performance of the Barranquilla Carnival, a jazz concert in Mompox, and a visit to Palenque, the first free town in the Americas. These activities highlight AmaWaterways’ commitment to supporting local musicians, guides, and artisans while offering guests meaningful cultural engagement.

“This launch represents the next chapter of our journey in Colombia,” said Catherine Powell, CEO of AmaWaterways. “Together with our Colombian partners, we’re creating unforgettable guest experiences while building a sustainable foundation for tourism that benefits local communities.”

Co-founder Kristin Karst added that the project embodies AmaWaterways’ collaborative spirit. “AmaMelodia celebrates Colombia’s rich culture and creativity. Every element—from décor to cuisine was developed with respect for local heritage.”

The initiative has been supported by ProColombia, the country’s tourism promotion agency. Its president, Carmen Caballero, noted that river tourism along the Magdalena “connects travellers with our traditions, landscapes, and communities,” aligning with Colombia’s goals for responsible and inclusive tourism. With AmaMelodia now joining AmaMagdalena, AmaWaterways cements its position as the first major river cruise operator on the Magdalena River offering travellers a new, sustainable way to experience the heart of Colombia.
