AmaWaterways Prepares for First-Ever Magdalena River Cruises in 2025

AmaWaterways recently announced updates on its preparations for the inaugural voyage of AmaMagdalena, the first of two ships to explore this new destination, scheduled to set sail in March 2025.

Co-founder and executive vice-president Kristin Karst highlighted the uniqueness of the experience, noting that until now, exploring the Magdalena River region with comfort and ease was difficult. “Our cruises are changing that, offering the seamless experience AmaWaterways is known for, while also providing exclusive access to culturally significant and often inaccessible destinations,” Karst said.

To achieve this, AmaWaterways has been working closely with local communities and officials to develop the infrastructure needed to support luxury river cruises. The company has also commissioned nine custom-designed excursion boats to give guests access to Colombia’s most remote and biodiverse areas.

Beyond exploration, AmaWaterways aims to contribute to the growth of the region. “Our journey here isn’t just about exploration; it’s about forging new paths for our guests while contributing to the growth and development of the region,” said Karst.

Onboard AmaMagdalena, guests will be treated to Colombian delicacies, including tropical fruit, artisanal chocolate, rum, and coffee tastings. A key highlight will be an intimate restaurant with a Colombian chef, offering a curated culinary journey that showcases the country’s rich flavours.

Shore excursions will also focus on deep cultural connections, giving guests the opportunity to interact with indigenous communities and explore natural wonders. Each tour will be guided by experienced locals, creating employment opportunities for the communities along the river. The first voyage of AmaMagdalena was initially scheduled for late 2024 but has been postponed to 15 March, 2025, to ensure the completion of essential infrastructure. A second ship, AmaMelodia, is still expected to launch in June 2025.

Rudi Schreiner, AmaWaterways’ co-founder and president, acknowledged the challenges of pioneering this new river cruise destination. “Opening a new river to the world is not easy, but it’s exactly these kinds of bold steps that allow us to offer our guests new experiences.”

For travellers affected by the delay, AmaWaterways is offering alternative arrangements, including rebooking options for other destinations or later dates in 2025.
