U.S. Travel Commission calls for urgent action to modernise travel infrastructure

A new report from U.S. Travel’s Commission on Seamless and Secure Travel is urging immediate reforms to prepare the U.S. for a decade of major global events, including the 2026 FIFA World Cup, the 2028 Olympic and Paralympic Games, the 2025 Ryder Cup, and America’s 250th anniversary. These events are expected to bring 40 million international visitors, generating $95 billion in economic activity.

U.S. Travel CEO Geoff Freeman emphasised the urgency of bold reforms, stating, “This is a once-in-a-generation chance to modernize travel, enhance security, and unlock a $100 billion opportunity over the next four years. Success will not come from small fixes or slow-moving reforms—it requires bold action now.”

The commission also highlighted outdated air traffic control systems and a shortage of air traffic controllers as critical issues that must be addressed. Without immediate action, Freeman warned, the U.S. risks turning away travelers, losing economic opportunities, and falling behind global competitors.

Key recommendations include:

  • Creating a White House task force to assess infrastructure needs
  • Expediting visa processing by increasing consular staffing.
  • Investing in airport screening technology and biometrics to reduce wait times.
  • Fully staffing customs agents at airports.
  • Streamlining security screenings, including allowing travelers to carry liquids and leave electronics in bags.
