Christchurch Airport has introduced a bold new look for international arrivals, offering travellers an immersive first impression of the South Island’s landscapes, history, and culture. The airport’s arrival walkways and baggage collection hall have been transformed with stunning artwork designed to showcase the deep connection between people and place.

The large-scale installation, developed by Māori-led agency Ariki Creative in collaboration with ChristchurchNZ, Tourism New Zealand, and Ngāi Tahu, covers over 300 square metres. It features giant light boards, floor-to-ceiling pillars, expansive wall murals, and a 40-metre-long glass balustrade depicting the rich cultural and historic timeline of Te Waipounamu, the South Island.
A Visual Story of the South Island
The artwork reflects themes of braided rivers, the journey of water from land to sea, and the relationship between people and the environment. Traditional Ngāi Tahu rock art and intricate patterns are seamlessly integrated, creating a powerful narrative that connects visitors with the region’s heritage from the moment they arrive.

“We wanted to create an experience that captures the essence of the South Island—its stories, its landscapes, and its people,” said a spokesperson from Ariki Creative. “This is more than just an artwork; it’s an invitation to explore and appreciate the deep history and culture of this land.”
Encouraging Responsible Travel
A key feature of the installation is the Tiaki Promise, a nationwide initiative that encourages visitors to travel responsibly, respect the environment, and uphold the values of kaitiakitanga (guardianship). The message serves as a reminder to international guests that exploring New Zealand comes with a responsibility to care for the land and its people.

Christchurch Airport’s latest transformation reflects a growing movement in New Zealand’s tourism industry one that prioritises authentic storytelling, cultural appreciation, and sustainable travel practices.
As the gateway to the South Island’s renowned natural wonders, Christchurch Airport is now setting the tone for an arrival experience that is both visually stunning and deeply meaningful.
