Expedia Travel Agent Affiliate Programme (TAAP) has expanded its agency service charge feature to New Zealand, giving local travel agents a new way to add discretionary service charges to eligible lodging bookings made through the platform. The move is designed to help agents better monetise their time, expertise and personalised service within a single transaction.
Under the new capability, agents in New Zealand can apply a service charge of up to 30 per cent of the total lodging booking value at checkout on eligible bookings. Expedia TAAP said no processing fees will apply, allowing agents to retain the full amount of the charge. The rollout addresses a long-standing operational gap for some agents, many of whom have either relied on separate offline processes to charge for their services or have chosen not to levy fees at all. By integrating the feature directly into the booking flow, Expedia TAAP is positioning the tool as a more efficient and commercially practical option for agencies seeking to strengthen margins.
Robin Lawther, Vice President of Expedia TAAP and Business Development, said the feature reflects the increasing importance of travel advisers in a more complex travel environment. He said the New Zealand launch gives agents greater flexibility and control over how they are compensated, while keeping the booking process simple and efficient.
At present, the agency service charge applies only to lodging bookings, but Expedia TAAP said it plans to extend the capability to additional lines of business, including flights and packages, later this year. That broader rollout is likely to be of particular interest to agencies looking for more consistent fee recovery across multiple booking categories. The New Zealand launch follows the introduction of the feature across a number of international markets, including the United States, Canada, Mexico and several European countries. Expedia TAAP said the expansion forms part of its wider effort to support agencies through technology, competitive supply and improved earning opportunities.
For the trade, this is significant as advisers continue to navigate disruption, complexity and rising service expectations, tools that make fee collection more seamless are becoming increasingly important to agency profitability and long-term sustainability.
