Air India CEO Campbell Wilson steps down

Air India Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director Campbell Wilson has resigned, in a significant leadership development for the Tata Group-owned carrier.

Wilson, who took the top role in July 2022 following Air India’s return to Tata Group ownership, has been central to the airline’s efforts to rebuild its reputation, modernise operations and reposition the carrier for long-term growth in an increasingly competitive Indian aviation market.

His departure comes at a pivotal time for the airline, which remains in the midst of a multi-year turnaround strategy designed to strengthen operational performance, fleet renewal, digital capability and customer experience. The resignation is also likely to attract close attention across the travel sector, given Air India’s growing network ambitions and the wider importance of India as one of the world’s fastest-expanding aviation markets.

Air India has been working to restore confidence among distribution partners, corporate buyers and international travellers, while also integrating major structural changes across the business. The carrier has been seeking to re-establish itself as a serious global player, with a sharpened focus on service standards, international connectivity and long-term fleet investment.

Air India has been one of the most closely watched airline transformation stories in recent years, and the appointment of a successor will now be critical in determining whether the airline can maintain momentum on its turnaround strategy.

Wilson is expected to remain through a six-month notice period while a successor is identified.
