Celebrity Cruises to launch European river cruise programme on the Rhine and Danube

Celebrity Cruises is set to make its debut in the European river cruise market in 2027, with the launch of new all-inclusive sailings on the Rhine and Danube, two of the continent’s most iconic waterways.

An offshoot of the premium ocean cruise brand, Celebrity River Cruises will introduce its first collection of itineraries on these major rivers, as part of an ambitious plan that includes an initial fleet of 10 new ships. The vessels will draw design inspiration from Celebrity’s acclaimed Edge-class ocean ships, known for their contemporary styling and guest-focused innovation. Celebrity has confirmed that its river product will follow an all-inclusive model, with fares covering alcoholic beverages, Wi-Fi, and one curated shore excursion per port. The cruise line is expected to unveil full itinerary details and open bookings in summer 2025.

The Rhine and Danube rivers are the most popular waterways for river cruising in Europe. According to Cleveland Research Company, the Rhine alone accounts for approximately 25% of the annual river cruise market. The Danube, stretching through Central and Eastern Europe, follows closely behind.

Speaking earlier this year, Royal Caribbean Group CEO Jason Liberty stressed that the company’s move into river cruising is a strategic growth initiative, not a side venture. “This is not a hobby for us,” said Liberty. “We’re fully committed to delivering the world’s best holiday experiences—across oceans and now rivers and doing so in a responsible and sustainable way.” Liberty also noted that around half of Royal Caribbean Group’s guests have either taken or are considering a river cruise, highlighting strong market potential for Celebrity’s expansion into the sector.

Celebrity joins a growing number of established brands exploring river cruising, including Lindblad Expeditions, which has partnered with Transcend Cruises to introduce new sailings on the Rhine.
