Thai Airways announces resumption direct flights from New Zealand

The resumption of direct flight from Auckland to Bangkok restores a long-standing long-haul link between New Zealand and Thailand, with Thai Airways having served Auckland for more than 30 years prior to the pandemic.

The route will reconnect travellers into Bangkok Suvarnabhumi Airport, one of Asia’s major aviation hubs, supporting onward connectivity across Asia and into Europe via Thailand. In 2019 the Auckland–Bangkok route carried close to 50,000 visitors from New Zealand from a range of markets including Thailand, India and Europe.

Mr Kittiphong Sansomboon, Chief Commercial Officer of Thai Airways, said, “This year, Thai Airways will resume daily Auckland–Bangkok services as a key long-haul network expansion, strategically strengthening Bangkok’s position as a major Southeast Asian hub and enhancing seamless connectivity linking Europe, Asia, and New Zealand via Thailand.”

NZ Director of Tourism Authority of Thailand, Mr. Pichaya Saisaengchan said the resumption of daily flights to Bangkok by Thai Airways is great news.

“The Tourism Authority of Thailand is delighted by Thai Airways’ return to Auckland. The reintroduction of a direct flight from New Zealand to Thailand, particularly by Thailand’s national carrier is seen as a strong catalyst to further stimulate the already healthy New Zealand market. In 2025, Thailand welcomed over 100,000 visitors from New Zealand, representing a 4.5% year-on-year growth. With the launch of direct services, we are optimistic that the market will accelerate into double-digit growth”, said Mr. Saisaengchan,

Auckland Airport Chief Executive Officer, Carrie Hurihanganui said, “Thailand continues to be one of Kiwi travellers most loved destinations, and a non-stop Auckland-Bangkok service brings that experience closer again. This route adds real value for travellers between both countries while strengthening our connections into Asia’s wider aviation network.”

Thai Airways are tipped to operate the Airbus A350-900 on the route offering a modern cabin layout and award-winning Thai hospitality and service in the air.

Dates for flight resumption will be announced by Thai Airways in due course.
