In a historic move, Vietjet Air has announced its inaugural air service between Auckland and Ho Chi Minh City, marking the first connection between New Zealand and Vietnam. The announcement was made at a high-profile event in Hanoi, attended by Vietnamese Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh and New Zealand Prime Minister Christopher Luxon, alongside senior officials and business leaders from both nations.
Set to commence in September 2025, the route will initially operate four return flights per week aboard Vietjet’s modern fleet. The service is expected to significantly enhance trade, tourism, and cultural ties between the two countries.

Prime Minister Christopher Luxon welcomed the milestone, stating,”I’m very pleased with Vietjet’s announcement that they will develop a new route to New Zealand, strengthening connectivity and people-to-people links between our two countries. This is a critical enabler of growth, opening up opportunities not just in tourism, but also in trade and education.”
The launch comes as Vietnam and New Zealand elevate their diplomatic relations to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership and prepare to celebrate 50 years of diplomatic ties.

Vietjet’s new service offers a cost-effective travel option for Kiwi travellers, with a range of seat classes—Business, SkyBoss, Deluxe, and Eco—along with a diverse selection of Vietnamese and international cuisine served onboard.
Ho Chi Minh City, A Gateway to Vietnam and Beyond: As Vietnam’s largest commercial hub and one of Southeast Asia’s fastest-growing cities, Ho Chi Minh City is renowned for its rich history, vibrant nightlife, and iconic cultural landmarks. The new connection provides New Zealanders seamless access to Vietnam’s top attractions, including the Mekong Delta, Ha Long Bay, and UNESCO World Heritage sites, while also linking to key destinations across Southeast and Northeast Asia.
This latest expansion strengthens Vietjet’s presence in the Australia-New Zealand region, following its successful entry into the Australian market in April 2023. The Auckland-Ho Chi Minh City route is set to unlock new opportunities for investment, education, and tourism, bringing the two nations closer than ever before.
